Running Advent Calendar – Day 22 – Athens, Greece

22 Dec

Today is Day 22 of my Running Advent Calendar. I have been exploring different running route from around the world everyday for the first 24 days of December leading up to Christmas. Today, I have selected Athens, Greece.

I selected Greece, and specifically Athens, because of its sport and running history. Here is a exerpt from the Athens Marathon website to explain:

“In 490 BC…

...the first battle for democracy was fought at the Greek village of Marathon. Though overwhelmingly out numbered by an invading Persian Army, the citizen-soldiers of Athens prevailed and in so doing allows the first democracy to be established and preserved the classical Greek way of life that became the foundation of western civilization.

Legend has it that, when the battle was won, the Athenian messenger Phidippides ran twenty-four miles to Athens, carrying news of that stunning victory. The modern marathon commemorates this feat.

The Athens Marathon is recognized as the original marathon course and was the same course for the 2004 Olympics held in Athens.”

As much as I would love to run the Athens Marathon because of this great historical significance, I think I would even be content just running a portion of it, if I wasn’t ready for a marathon. The map of the route shows that it finishes in the amazing Olympic Stadium in Athens – the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games.

Let’s hope I am marathon ready if I ever find myself in Athens, Greece!

Omg! Your last three posts, Rio, Barcelona, Athens… are my three favorite places. When I was in Rio, I didn’t find time to run, but I did in Barcelona and in Athens and a couple of the Greek Islands. Beautiful places! 🙂

      What a coincidence!

I haven’t yet had a chance to run in or even visit any of the cities yet but hope to one day!

Athens would be awesome. I have heard that the course is difficult and parts of it are not on paved roads or paths. It’s also hilly and very hot. That’s what I’ve been told anyway.
