It’s Day 3 of my Running Advent Calendar. If you are new to my blog, my Running Advent Calendar has me writing about different running routes around the world from December 1st – 24th.
Today, I will explore the running route I most enjoyed while on vacation in San Francisco, California in February 2012.
My husband and I stayed in the Fisherman’s Wharf area of San Francisco and I quickly learnt that this was a perfect starting point for a run.
I took off from our hotel and ran towards the water (San Francisco Bay). I jumped on to the Embarcadero for a bit and then ran through the main part of Fisherman’s Wharf, with all its shops and restaurants.
As this was an early morning run, the streets were fairly empty and very little was open – it was clam and quiet – perfect for run where I wanted to check out some sites, but didn’t want to spend the entire time dodging other tourists.
I ran past Ghiradelli Square and made note to return to visit the Ghiradelli chocolate shop with my husband after my run.
As I exited Fisherman’s Wharf, I climbed a hill and was greeted with a fantastic view of the Golden Gate bridge, and a lovely park in the Marina to run through. I carried on along the water, admiring my view and the fact that I was running outdoors in shorts in February.
Finally, once I realized I couldn’t carry on staring at the Golden Gate bridge and the water forever, I turned around and looped back.
The view on the way back was amazing as well, with a clear shot of Alcatraz and some of the San Francisco skyline. It was one of the most scenic runs I have ever had the opportunity to enjoy.
If I ever get back to San Francisco, and I truly hope I do, I plan to extend that run right up to the Golden Gate bridge…and maybe even cross it, (dare I suggest maybe even for the San Francisco marathon? Only time will tell…)
Stay tuned for Day 4 of the Running Advent Calendar tomorrow and check out Days 1 and 2 of my Running Advent Calendar if you missed them:
